Just how special is mass produced jewellery?

The race is always on to have more – more money, more time – and technology can be a way of making this a reality.

The Modern World

Technology makes it possible for producers to make more jewellery using less gold.

The idea is that the jewellery is hollow, or honeycombed, so that less gold is used thereby helping to minimise production costs. On top of that, once the pendant or ring has been designed, it takes 'the technology' about 5 or 6 hours to create the finished piece.  This kind of technology comes at a price and is aimed more at large organisations who tend towards mass production.

My Lovely Workshop and all the Tools Within

I'm sure there's a place for this but it's not what I'm about. I like jewellery to have a reassuringly weighty feel to it and to know that it's going to stand the test of time. I want to be able to wear it wherever I go - to design it for durability as well as lasting beyond the seasons of fashion. The knowledge that it was made using the classical skills of traditional workmanship only adds to its special nature – the fact that someone took time to make it instead of leaving it up to 'technology' and for it to be one of millions identical to it.

Who knows, in years to come, this hand created piece of jewellery may be uncovered by archaeologists – so I'd better make sure it's worth searching for......
